Abstract

The continued success of the single engined Hawk advanced training aircraft is partly due to upgrades and improvements to its design and specification. These changes have kept pace with developments on frontline aircraft in order to maximise training benefit. The engine, a Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca Adour turbofan has recently undergone significant changes with the incorporation of the latest technology from Rolls-Royce, Tubomeca and Hamilton Sundstrand.

This paper aims to provide an introduction to the engine, it’s control system and how a joint Flight Trials team, comprising of the airframe constructor, BAE Systems plc and engine constructor, Rolls-Royce plc, conducted the flight test activity. The trials were undertaken at the customers’ flight test facility in South Africa, assisted by the incountry manufacturer, DENEL Aviation.
