Wake Penetration – a Tumultuous Farewell of 1st Typhoon Prototype Aircraft

Abstract
Aerodynamic model validation at EADS Military Aircraft Systems (EADS-MAS) is shown in this investigation with the analysis of flight data of the Eurofighter aircraft while penetrating wake turbulences. Main steps in model validation are the preparation of the test matrix, the selection of the manoeuvre and the comparison of the real time data with the simulation data. For the data collecting the Eurofighter’s first prototype aircraft (DA1) had been used, since it had a nose boom for air data collecting. After its maiden flight 27.03.1994 the Development Aircraft #1 (DA1) had the main task of aircraft handling testing and air data collecting. On 21.12.2005 its flight lifetime ended with its 578th flight after 494 flight hours by successfully penetrating another Eurofighter’s turbulent vorteces.
