Abstract

On request by the Swedish Air force (SwAF) and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), Saab has developed a CBRN protection system for the aircrew operating the JAS 39 Gripen fighter.

The system consists of equipment that is meant to be worn as part of the AEA in case of CBRN threat or during CBRN training.

This paper covers, in short, the different test activities performed by the Flight Test and Verification department at Saab in order to verify and validate the CBRN protection system. The CBRN project was carried out in collaboration with the customer FMV. Accordingly, representatives (a/c technician, pilots and test engineers) from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) also participated in the testing. The scope of these tests did not include verifying the actual ability of protecting the aircrew against CBRN. Such tests were instead performed mainly by FOI (Swedish Defence Research Agency) but are not included in this paper.
